Foldforming is a metal technique that can be used with or without enameling. The "father" of foldforming is Charles Lewton-Brain who wrote the project in the book. A simple set of line folds are used in the project, but the chapter provides examples of many complex folds that would be great for enameling. A specialize form of Foldforming is called Score and Fold which can either be freeform or in patterns. Another type of specialty Foldforming was done by Harold Tishler and a mini-project on one of his patterns is provided in the book. Below is more information on Foldforming. TOC
Class with Charles Lewton-BrainJust had a class with Charles at Peters Valley and it was terrific. He teaches at many places so check your nearest craft center to see if he's scheduled. We learned tons of folds. I made this bowl on the 4th day of class. Mmm now need to decide if I enamel it or just add a patina. Charles does sell a book on patinas for metal finishing.
Videos On FoldformingCharles Lewton-Brain has many videos on youtube.com, some about Foldforming and some on other metalsmithing techniques. Charles also sells CDs and many books on a variety of topics and an overview of Foldforming and a Foldforming CD that I find very helpful even after taking his class (great reminder). Others also have videos on youtube.com - just seach on Foldforming on YouTube.com. Score and Fold - A 5 and 6 pointed starTeresa Olavarria provides well laid out patterns for the score and fold method for 5 and 6 pointed stars. These make great ornaments. Multiple sizes are provided, but these can be resized. Teresa teaches at the Rosewood Art Centre in Kettering, OH. Check the link to find her schedule. The instructions say to use a tool to score the lines where you will fold. I recommend using a round "nail-art" dot tool to do this. I use the smallest in this set.
Because these little teasures are so steep, when enameling them, I recommend you do one of two things (or both for insurance): before firing - spray the raw enamel with Klyr-Fire/Water (in the book this is called Spray and Catch) and/or put mica under the trivet the star is on and over the firing screen (so that if any enamel falls off it will go on the mica and not your screen). Ideas for projectsIngrid Regula (who did the Basse Taille project in the book), teaches at her community in Sun City Center in Florida. Here is a basic foldformed project she teaches, of course also incorporating Basse Taille!
